's jobs report is, quote, a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual standstill. a standstill? we've had 32 straight months of private sector job growth. that's nearly 5 1/2 million jobs. president obama took us back from the brink of an economic catastrophe. that's leadership. that's a heck of a closing argument and what governor romney is offering doesn't even stand. joining me is krystaal ball and alicia menendez. krystal, will we look back and say that this is the week that decided this election? >> i think we will look back and say this is the week that he sealed the deal. if the president came into this week with a lead in the critical battleground states, he came in with a little bit of momentum, although things were relatively static. but i do think between the response to hurricane sandy, between the way that governor christie embraced him this week, mayor bloomberg's endorsement, the magazine endorsement and then the jobs number today i think sealed the deal. i think it's the critical piece. as we respond as a country to a natural disaster to a crisis situation, we reali

we study. in a free market economy, recessions and recoveries, upswings and down swings are part and parcel of the world we live in. when you look at how budgets are proposed, off of the congressional budget office projection. they are not that realistic. in 2014, 2015, 2016, they are projected real gdp growth of 4.4%. sounds pretty good. how realistic is it? if you take a look at reality, what's happened since the beginning of the century? gdp has grown at 1.7% and we know we are in a pretty sluggish economy. there is a huge disconnect between what's proposed and what's going on outside this window? >> that's the big deal. the claim is, i'm going to go in and cut taxes. don't worry, cutting taxes is going to be stimulative. we are going to end up with way more jobs and there will be fewer taxes from each individual. there will be way more people paying into the tax system. revenue neutral. lakshman is telling us you have a choice over how much you charge people in taxes. they may not produce all the jobs. what he is doing on day one is adding to the deficit. >> could be but let'

the unemployment numbers saying the increase in the unemployment rate is a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual stand still. but when we look at the jobs that have been added over the last six months, we see the steady rise, going in the right direction. unemployment dropping to under 8%, staying there. does that take out the economic message of mitt romney at the kneecaps? >> not really. one, we're not seeing the type of job growth that we need to be coming back. that number has to be way over 200,000 per month. but what it's -- and the other thing is, when you dig down into those nebs, you look at the income numbers. people are not feeling it. their incomes are not rising. so when you look at this from a political point of view, it's what people feel. what's their emotional pocketbook reaction? and the fact is right now people are still hurting. so, again, both candidates are going to spin everything. i think it's already baked in. i don't think it's going to affect it much. if it went over 8%, it could have. but at the end of the day, i think that their messages, what they're

. this is a swing constituency like in ohio. they're disappointed in obama on the economy and don't like where the republican party is on social issues. they've been bouncing back and forth between, you know, when they're focusing on the economy, they're voting for romney, when they're focusing more on the social issues they're voting for obama. i look at a constituency like that and think of an event like this, this is just major sort of natural disaster and you have bipartisan, cross partisan voices who are praising the president's leadership in this case and i almost could see that maybe would break the tie. >> yeah. >> right. bill clinton out there campaigning for obama, it can be effective but people expect bill clinton to be campaigning for obama. when it's chris christie suddenly the guy who's the keynote speaker at the republican convention speaking up and vouching for him, that's the kind of thing, people who are wavering back and forth, that registers with them to some extent. >> how are you hanging in personally dealing with the storm? >> i have it a lot better than most people. i u

the president's ideas on how to deal with an economy are an empty binder, if you will. we have brought forward item after item and suggestion after suggestion and bill after bill. we've passed bipartisan legislation in the house, and the senate won't take it up. what we need to do is make certain that we extend the bush tax cuts. we also want to go about closing some of the loopholes and primarily we have to cut federal spending. federal spending is completely out of control and making some cuts into this baseline so that you're actually reducing what the federal government spends is imperative. this president has put more debt on the backs of future generations and on the american people than any other president in history. and we have to get the spending under control. i talk to women every day that say they have 16 trillion reasons to go to the poll and vote against this president because they are so fed up with this out of control spending. >> congresswoman, mash sha blackburn. good to see you. >> good to see you. thank you. >> dave, let me bring you back in. it's interesting he mentioned

and creating economic growth. there's no evidence that if you cut taxes on the rich that that makes the economy grow. that's a problem because that is essentially mitt romney's whole reason for living. this is the republican party's economic reason for existing. if you cut taxes on the rich, the job creators, that will jump start the economy. this is the whole basis of the party' economic philosophy. this is why congressional republicans pledge their first born children to a man named grover. and here comes this highly respected agency that says it turns out the whole thing is bunk. giving rich people a tax break doesn't help the economy but it sure does help rich people. what do you do if you're the republican party? you pressure the agency into burying the report which is exactly what republicans in congress did this fall. the "new york times" is reporting that the congressional research service quietly withdrew their entire report. reportedly against the advice of their own economics experts. this is amazing, right? if a report tells you something you do not want to hear, get rid of the repo

from your poll if i could put it up. president obama's 16-point lead with women on the economy. now a four-point disadvantage. how worried should democrats be? >> very worried. if this is actually going to bear out, it's a disaster for the democratic ticket. president obama underperforms with men, particularly white men at such a large degree that he needs to overperform with women. the obama campaign is really questioning these polling figures saying that the president is still well ahead with women. it's unclear. we are seeing that trend in basically all the polling across the board. that he's lost a lot of ground with women since the first debate. the president has to make up that deficit with women if he's going to win. there is no other way. his deficit with men is so large. >> lynn, for women that are still undid he sided, the handful of women who might be undecided, we heard the economic message from governor romney, heard the president's fiscal message, coupled with his stance on women's issues, as well. which is having the greater pull on those independent women voters righ

believes if you look had 40 years from now, a thoughtful, long-term approach to make a robust economy. they felt mitt romney got the nod that way, and governor romney had a better set of tools to break through the gridlock in washington, d.c. a lot of speculation as to why they may have endorsed mitt romney. they did give him an interview face to face. they said that had nothing to do with anything. that's from rick green, that said, how big a deal is this in a swing state like ohio? a paper with this record. or iowa rather. a paper that has this record, a paper considered to be a liberal-leaning paper. does this have influence? >> normally i would say no. i work for a newspaper, i like to think we're all powerful. but i think there are limits on endorsements, but in the case of "the des moines register," a very influential paper in iowa, as you just said. i do think it can make a difference, especially when it's seen as stirring the pot as this one is. if they endorsed president obama, i think that would have probably been interpreted as what was expected. we would have taken note of
